Jessie Plaskett has been a volunteer escort for over a year and enjoys every moment.

For our members in Ravenshead and Blidworth we provide door-to-door pick-up and return, using the minibuses supplied by Ravenshead Community Transport. An essential part of this service is our escorts, a dedicated team of volunteers. But we need more. Without an escort, RCT can't take our members.

"I love it", says Jessie. "I have contact with the members, and I speak to each one, which is very rewarding. When we pick them up I make sure their front door is locked, see them onto the bus, check their seatbelt and help them off at the club. On the return journey I make sure they're safely indoors."

A morning or afternoon duty on the buses takes about 90 minutes. Most volunteer escorts dont have a regular spot in the rota, but help about once a month on any of four weekdays, when required and to suit them. Escorts are collected from home and taken back at the end of the duty. The problem that some found with the door on the newer of the two minibuses has now been solved. A short training session is given to all new escorts.

We also need volunteer assistants for half-day duties at the Cornwater Club Charity Shop which opened in May 2008. This entails spending around three hours morning or afternoon at the shop in Queen Street, Mansfield, on days and shifts that suit you. Full training is given and there is free parking. If you are interested, have a few hours to spare once a fortnight and would like to know more, please ring our shop manager, Sharon Baum, on 01623 656133.
